Enzo Fernandez confirms Man City exit wish

According to a report by FootballTransfers published on Friday, October 30, 2026, Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed his intention to return to River Plate before eventually retiring from professional football. The Argentine international remains committed to rejoining his boyhood club despite recently beginning a new chapter of his career in England.

Fernandez completed a high-profile move to Manchester City from Chelsea on Deadline Day during the summer transfer window. The reported €145 million transfer made him the most expensive signing in Premier League history. However, the midfielder has made it clear that his ambitions extend beyond his current spell at the Etihad Stadium.

The 25-year-old spent 15 years at River Plate before moving to Benfica in 2022 to begin his European career. During his time with the Argentine giants, he made 53 senior appearances and developed into one of the country's promising midfield talents.

Although his current contract with Manchester City runs until 2031, Fernandez has repeatedly expressed his desire to return to Argentina and represent River Plate again.

Speaking during an appearance on the Argentine programme Los Edul, the midfielder reaffirmed his commitment to the idea, insisting that his decision was based on a genuine personal ambition.

"I want to return to River at some point, I’ve said it several times. I’m going to return, I’m sure of it. It’s something I really want. I stand by my words and what’s on record."

He further explained that returning to the Buenos Aires club would give him an opportunity to achieve more success while enjoying another extended period with the team that helped shape his football career.

"If I say it, it’s because I feel it and because I know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did."

Nevertheless, Fernandez acknowledged that his immediate responsibilities remain at Manchester City, where he has a lengthy contract and is expected to play an important role in the club's future.

"Today, I’m here with a long contract at Manchester City. There’s still a long way to go, but it will happen," he said.

Fernandez was among three significant midfield additions made by City during the summer, alongside Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi. Since arriving on September 1, he has registered one goal in 10 appearances.

Despite his long-term plans, an immediate departure is considered unlikely as Manchester City expect to retain his services for the foreseeable future.
