Trevoh Chalobah reveals Chelsea regret and Cesc Fabregas role in 'amazing' Como transfer

According to Football London, Trevoh Chalobah has admitted that he once hoped to become a Chelsea legend before ending his long association with the Premier League club and moving to Italian side Como during the summer transfer window.

The 27-year-old defender reportedly reflected on his departure in an interview with The Athletic, describing his exit as a difficult moment after spending 18 years developing within Chelsea’s system. Despite his departure, Chalobah indicated that the club remained an important part of his football journey.

Chalobah joined Como in a transfer reportedly worth more than £30 million, bringing his time at Stamford Bridge to an end with two years remaining on his contract and an option to extend his deal until June 2029.

Reports indicated that Chelsea received an initial £25.7 million, with a further £5.1 million potentially available through performance-related add-ons. His departure was also part of a broader summer transfer clearout that reportedly generated approximately £375 million for the London club.

Reflecting on his final season at Chelsea, Chalobah expressed disappointment that the team had not achieved all its objectives, although he believed his individual performances had been among his strongest.

"The team didn’t achieve what we wanted to achieve last season, but I thought I had one of my best seasons, playing the most games and scoring a few goals.

"I’d been there since I was eight, and I wanted to be a legend there, but sometimes the way we plan things is not how things work out," he said.

The England international also explained that he continued to follow Chelsea after leaving and remained in contact with some players and members of staff. His comments highlighted the lasting connection he maintained with the club where he spent most of his football career.

During his time at Chelsea, Chalobah made 151 appearances across all competitions and won several major honours, including two FIFA Club World Cup titles, the FA Cup, the UEFA Conference League and the UEFA Super Cup.

He acknowledged that competition for places had always been intense, particularly when experienced defenders such as Thiago Silva, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger were part of the squad.

Chalobah also credited Como manager Cesc Fabregas with helping persuade him to embrace the move to Italy.

"The manager reached out to me over the summer and explained the project and where he saw me playing. I read about the rise of Como, how exciting the team is," he said.

He added that the club’s footballing ambitions, Fabregas’ interest in his experience and his appreciation of Italian life all influenced his decision.

"The football is amazing. The manager we have is great," he said.
