According to a report by FootballTransfers on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, Real Madrid made a sensible decision by refusing to meet AZ Alkmaar’s reported €60 million valuation of Dutch midfielder Kees Smit during the summer transfer window. Although the 20-year-old is considered one of Europe’s exciting young talents, questions remain about whether he is ready to justify such a significant transfer fee.
Smit made his senior debut for AZ in early 2024 before gradually establishing himself as a regular member of the first team the following year. His performances improved considerably during his first full season as a guaranteed starter, when he registered five goals and 10 assists.
His impressive displays earned him his first senior Netherlands appearance in March and attracted attention from several European clubs, including Real Madrid. The Spanish giants reportedly sent scouts to monitor his progress in Alkmaar as they assessed his suitability for their midfield.
Newcastle United were also linked with the talented Dutchman but eventually secured the services of fellow countryman Sean Steur from Ajax. The Premier League club reportedly paid €23.5 million for Steur, considerably less than AZ’s valuation of Smit.
Despite the growing interest, no club submitted a formal offer for Smit before the transfer window closed. His reported asking price appeared to be a significant obstacle, particularly when compared with his Estimated Transfer Value of approximately €20.3 million.
Real Madrid’s decision was not based solely on financial considerations. While Smit possesses considerable potential, he remains a developing player who has yet to reach the level of the established midfielders currently at the Santiago Bernabeu.
According to SciSports, his present ability is below that of Madrid’s senior midfield options. The platform also gave a relatively modest assessment of how suitable the Spanish club would be for his playing style and opportunities for regular first-team football.
Remaining at AZ could therefore benefit Smit’s development. He has signed a two-year contract extension that keeps him at the Dutch club until 2030, allowing him to continue gaining experience as a regular starter.
Eredivisie expert Dylan ter Laak believes the midfielder can improve further in Alkmaar. Another impressive campaign could strengthen his influence within the team and increase his appeal to leading European clubs.
Although Real Madrid may require midfield reinforcements, avoiding an expensive investment in a player who is still developing appears reasonable. Smit has the potential to reach the highest level, but consistent performances and further experience could prove more valuable than an immediate move to Spain.
