Liverpool star provides Chelsea injury update as Andoni Iraola sweats over Carabao Cup clash

According to a report by Football London on Monday October 26, 2026, Liverpool midfielder Florian Wirtz has provided an encouraging injury update ahead of the Reds' Carabao Cup fourth-round clash against Chelsea on Wednesday evening.

The Germany international is a doubt for the encounter after suffering an ankle injury during Liverpool's 2-0 victory over Brighton at Anfield on Sunday.

Wirtz was forced off shortly after the hour mark following a challenge in midfield and was replaced by Trey Nyoni. His injury has raised concerns over his availability as Liverpool prepare to welcome Chelsea to Anfield.

However, the 23-year-old has played down the severity of the problem, suggesting that he hopes to return to action soon.

Speaking to Sky Germany after the Brighton match, Wirtz explained that he had not undergone medical tests but did not believe the injury was too serious. He also revealed that he had been twisting his ankle over the past few weeks and needed to address the issue.

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola also provided an update, confirming that the midfielder would undergo further assessment by the club's medical team.

The Liverpool boss admitted that the injury did not initially appear serious but stressed the importance of monitoring Wirtz's condition because of the team's busy fixture schedule.

The Reds are preparing for their Carabao Cup meeting with Chelsea, with Wirtz's availability likely to depend on the outcome of the medical assessment and his recovery over the coming days.

Wednesday's encounter could also see Wirtz reunite with Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, who coached the midfielder during their successful spell together at Bayer Leverkusen.

Under Alonso, Wirtz established himself as one of Europe's most exciting attacking midfielders, recording 38 goals and 43 assists in 119 appearances for the German club. He also helped Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title unbeaten and lift the DFB-Pokal.

Since joining Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in June 2025 for a reported £116 million, however, Wirtz has faced scrutiny over his performances.

During his debut season under former Liverpool manager Arne Slot, the German made 49 appearances across all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 10 assists.

Despite the criticism, Wirtz has insisted that he remains focused on football and is not concerned about outside opinions.

Liverpool will now hope the midfielder's ankle problem is not serious, although the club must be cautious about rushing him back before he has fully recovered.
