According to a report by Metro on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes Matheus Cunha could become an influential figure for the club after his impressive performance in Tuesday's Champions League victory over Roma.
Cunha scored twice in the closing stages as Michael Carrick's side recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes had earlier converted a penalty to begin the comeback before the Brazilian forward completed the turnaround.
The result ended Manchester United's nine-match winless run and provided the team with a much-needed boost ahead of a challenging period in their campaign.
Before the Roma encounter, Cunha had managed just two goals across all competitions since joining the club. However, his decisive contribution has raised expectations that he could finally establish himself as one of United's most important attacking players.
Ferdinand believes the performance could represent a turning point for the 28-year-old, who has previously demonstrated his technical ability but struggled to produce consistent contributions in front of goal.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former United defender suggested that Cunha had the potential to become a major difference-maker if he could maintain the intensity and determination displayed against the Italian side.
Ferdinand was particularly impressed by the Brazilian's work rate and commitment when his team did not have possession, highlighting how his pressing and determination helped create opportunities during the contest.
He also pointed out that Cunha's red card, which followed his aggressive pressing during the match, was an example of his eagerness to contribute, although he considered the incident immature.
According to Ferdinand, the forward should study his performance and identify the moments when his energy and commitment inspired the supporters and helped his teammates.
The former defender believes maintaining that approach in subsequent matches could help Cunha become a consistent performer for Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Ferdinand also highlighted the importance of Kobbie Mainoo to Carrick's plans following the midfielder's return from injury.
He noted that United had lost five matches during Mainoo's absence, underlining the 21-year-old's influence on the team's performances.
Ferdinand believes Mainoo's composure, ability to retain possession under pressure and control in different areas of the pitch make him essential to the midfield.
With Carlos Baleba currently sidelined by a hamstring injury, he has urged Carrick to keep Mainoo fit and build the team around the England international.
The Roma victory has therefore provided United with renewed confidence, while Ferdinand hopes Cunha and Mainoo can play important roles in improving the team's fortunes.
