Steven Gerrard Reveals Why He Turned Down Real Madrid and Bayern Munich

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has explained why he remained at Anfield despite attracting interest from some of Europe's biggest football clubs, including Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

Speaking on the Overlap Daily podcast, Gerrard revealed that several opportunities to move abroad came his way during his playing career. However, he said he was never particularly interested in leaving Liverpool at the time.

According to Gerrard, José Mourinho was involved in some of the approaches from foreign clubs. He recalled that Real Madrid and Inter Milan showed interest on different occasions, while Bayern Munich also emerged as a possible destination towards the end of his Liverpool career.

Gerrard explained that he was enjoying his football under former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers when some of these opportunities arose. As a result, he did not feel motivated to pursue a move away from the English club.

He acknowledged that receiving attention from such prominent European teams was flattering, but remaining at Liverpool was the decision he preferred.

The former England international also admitted that seeing English players succeed abroad sometimes makes him wonder what his own career might have looked like had he accepted one of those offers.

He specifically mentioned Jude Bellingham's achievements at Real Madrid and Harry Kane's success at Bayern Munich as examples that occasionally prompt him to reflect on the opportunities he turned down.

Despite these thoughts, Gerrard insisted that he does not regret his decisions.

During his 19-year playing career with Liverpool, Gerrard made 710 appearances and won nine trophies. He later moved to the United States to play for LA Galaxy, joining the Major League Soccer club in 2015 before ending his playing career in 2016.

After retiring, Gerrard moved into management, taking charge of Rangers, Aston Villa and Saudi Arabian club Al Ettifaq. He left the Saudi side in January 2025 and has remained without a managerial position since then
