Manchester United have reportedly agreed to postpone making a final decision on Michael Carrick's managerial future until the November international break following their disappointing 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
According to a report by The Athletic on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the club's hierarchy has decided to give Carrick additional time to improve the team's performances before determining whether he should continue as manager.
The development follows United's latest defeat on Saturday, which extended their winless run to nine matches across all competitions. The disappointing sequence of results has intensified pressure on the former Manchester United midfielder, with growing concerns about the team's direction.
The Athletic journalist Laurie Whitwell reported that officials at Old Trafford have privately agreed to try to reach the November international break before taking any decisive action regarding Carrick's position.
Under the arrangement, Carrick will have another opportunity to demonstrate improvements in the remaining fixtures. Manchester United are expected to face Roma in the Champions League before travelling to play Aston Villa in the Premier League.
However, the decision to delay an announcement does not guarantee that Carrick will retain his position beyond the international break. His future is still expected to depend heavily on the team's performances and results during the coming matches.
United's defeat against Chelsea further complicated the situation. Morgan Rogers opened the scoring for the home side in the second half before Lisandro Martinez received a red card following a challenge on Wesley Fofana inside the penalty area. Cole Palmer subsequently converted the penalty to secure a 2-0 victory for Chelsea.
The result left Manchester United occupying 17th position in the Premier League standings, increasing fears surrounding their difficult campaign.
Despite the mounting pressure, Carrick has maintained that his immediate priority is preparing the team for its next fixture. After the Chelsea defeat, he also responded affirmatively when questioned about remaining in charge for the upcoming match.
Meanwhile, Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, Unai Emery and Antonio Conte have reportedly emerged as possible managerial alternatives should United eventually decide to dismiss Carrick.
