According to reports published on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Chelsea youngster Kendry Paez is reportedly considering an exit from Stamford Bridge when the January transfer window opens, having struggled to secure a place in manager Xabi Alonso’s first-team plans. Transfer journalist Nicolo Schira has indicated that the Ecuadorian midfielder is “ready to leave Chelsea,” although his preferred destination and the nature of a potential move remain uncertain.
Paez joined Chelsea last summer after celebrating his 18th birthday, having agreed to the transfer from Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle two years earlier. The move generated considerable excitement, with expectations that the talented midfielder would eventually establish himself as an important member of Chelsea’s senior squad.
However, his development has not progressed as anticipated. Loan spells with Strasbourg and River Plate failed to provide the breakthrough he needed, leaving questions about his immediate future in west London. He has subsequently been featuring for Chelsea’s Under-21 team during the ongoing 2026/27 campaign.
Despite his difficulties, Paez has received encouragement from established Chelsea players, including captain Reece James and forward Cole Palmer. Both reportedly believe the youngster possesses the qualities required to become a valuable player for the club in the coming years.
Journalist Ben Jacobs previously highlighted the support Paez had received from senior members of the squad, explaining their involvement in his development and long-term prospects.
“I think Palmer had spoken to Kendry Paez even when he was at Strasbourg about long-term integration, and Reece James has had a conversation with him as well,” Jacobs reported.
He added: “So a lot of the senior Chelsea players have been quite invested in Kendry Paez because they think that he could be big for the football club one day.”
Nevertheless, the midfielder has struggled to translate that confidence into consistent performances. Reports indicate that he has managed only one assist in four appearances for Chelsea’s Under-21 side this season, raising further concerns about his progress.
Questions have also emerged in previous reports regarding his professionalism. However, adapting to English football, coping with increased expectations and finding regular playing opportunities could also have contributed to his struggles.
Paez was previously considered one of Ecuador’s brightest young prospects and made history as the youngest goalscorer in the country’s top-flight competition.
With January approaching, a departure could offer him an opportunity to gain regular senior football and rebuild his momentum. Chelsea must now consider whether another loan spell or a permanent transfer would best serve the midfielder’s development and future career.
