Chelsea handed crucial injury boost after Man Utd win as Xabi Alonso makes honest admission

According to a report by Football London on Monday, November 2, 2026, Chelsea have received a significant boost following their 2-0 victory over Manchester United, with young goalkeeper Mike Penders showing enough quality to ease concerns over Emiliano Martínez's absence through injury. His recent performances have given manager Xabi Alonso greater confidence that the Argentine international does not need to be rushed back into action.

The 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper was given an opportunity in Chelsea's first team after Martínez sustained a fractured jaw during the club's 2-0 win against Everton on October 17. However, Penders initially struggled to make a convincing impression in his first major Premier League appearance against Tottenham Hotspur.

During Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Spurs, the youngster made an unfortunate mistake by punching a corner into his own net, allowing the visitors to take the lead at Stamford Bridge. Despite the setback, Alonso continued to show faith in him, encouraging the goalkeeper to put the experience behind him and use it as an opportunity to improve.

Penders subsequently demonstrated considerable improvement, particularly during Chelsea's Carabao Cup encounter with Liverpool. Although the Blues eventually suffered defeat, he delivered an impressive performance, making several important saves and stopping Ryan Gravenberch's penalty during the shootout.

He carried that confidence into the meeting with Manchester United, where his contributions helped Chelsea secure a valuable clean sheet. One particularly impressive moment came late in the contest when he produced an excellent fingertip save to push Bryan Mbeumo's powerful long-range attempt onto the crossbar.

Alonso was pleased with the youngster's development and praised his consistency across the two matches against Liverpool and Manchester United.

"Not just today, I think that in Liverpool he was really solid, he had a very good performance, very stable for a 'keeper and today he has shown a good level," the Chelsea manager said.

He further emphasised the importance of Penders' progress, adding: "Another clean sheet, the second one in three games and we need to keep going. Mike has overcome the difficult moment that we got here last Saturday and this is part of the development of a goalkeeper, of any player."

Meanwhile, Martínez is reportedly making progress towards returning to action earlier than initially anticipated, although wearing a protective mask could be necessary.

Nevertheless, Penders' recent displays have strengthened Chelsea's goalkeeping options, allowing the club to manage Martínez's recovery carefully without placing unnecessary pressure on him to return prematurely.
