Nigeria 1-0 Venezuela: Flamingos book Fifa U17 WWC semifinal spot thanks to Oduntan's late goal

According to a report by Daily Post on Monday November 2, 2026, Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, have booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Venezuela on Sunday.

Captain Azeezat Oduntan scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot in the 89th minute to send the Nigerian youngsters into the last four of the competition in Morocco.

The Flamingos started the quarter-final encounter with attacking intent and created several promising opportunities as they searched for an early breakthrough.

Tosin Rafiu, Mary Dunstan and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi all tested Venezuela's defence with efforts on goal, while Oluebube Umejiaku also threatened in the opening stages.

However, Venezuela goalkeeper and captain Valeria Rebanales produced an impressive performance to keep Nigeria from finding the back of the net.

The South American side also showed attacking ambition and created opportunities through Ariana Ojeda and Migleydys Bolsegui as both teams looked to take control of the contest.

Nigeria's Favour Nkwocha received the only yellow card of the first half in the 24th minute, but neither team managed to score before the interval.

The Flamingos continued their search for a goal after the restart, but Venezuela remained organised defensively and made life difficult for the Nigerian attackers.

With the match heading towards a goalless conclusion, Nigeria finally found the breakthrough in the 89th minute.

Captain Oduntan stepped up to convert a crucial penalty, giving the Flamingos a 1-0 advantage at a decisive moment in the encounter.

Her late strike proved enough to settle the quarter-final, as Nigeria held on during the closing moments to secure victory and confirm their place in the semi-finals.

The result represents another important achievement for the Flamingos, who will now turn their attention to the last-four stage as they continue their quest for the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title.

Oduntan's late penalty ultimately made the difference in a closely contested match, ensuring Nigeria's impressive campaign in Morocco continues.
