Former Real Madrid Star Slams Pedri After El Clásico Performance: ‘Absolutely dreadful

According to a report by Madrid Universal on Tuesday October 27, 2026, Former Real Madrid midfielder Rafael van der Vaart has criticised Pedri following Barcelona's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, describing the Spaniard's performance as “absolutely dreadful.”

The Dutchman also believes Frenkie de Jong has an opportunity to challenge for a starting position as he returns from injury and competes for a place in Hansi Flick's midfield.

Speaking to reports, Van der Vaart argued that Pedri and several Barcelona players failed to perform at their usual level during Sunday's El Clasico at the Spotify Camp Nou.

The former Netherlands international was particularly unimpressed with Pedri's display, suggesting that the midfielder's disappointing performance could give De Jong renewed hope of securing more playing time.

“Pedri was absolutely dreadful and the others were also very sloppy, so De Jong has no reason to fear the competition. Opportunities will come,” Van der Vaart said.

His comments attracted attention because of Pedri's importance to Barcelona's midfield. The Spain international is a key figure in the team's possession-based approach and regularly dictates the tempo of their play.

Meanwhile, De Jong's return from injury provides Flick with another option in the centre of the pitch. The Dutch midfielder spent several months on the sidelines before making his comeback against Real Madrid.

He featured for the final 15 minutes of the contest, although Barcelona's defeat overshadowed the personal achievement of returning to action.

De Jong has made it clear that he wants to regain his place in the starting lineup as quickly as possible. The midfielder believes he is ready to gradually increase his playing time.

His return gives Flick greater flexibility when selecting his midfield. However, replacing Pedri will require consistent performances rather than relying on one disappointing display from the Spaniard.

Pedri remains an influential member of Barcelona's squad, while De Jong must demonstrate that he can maintain his fitness and rediscover his best form after his lengthy absence.
