According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday October 22, 2026, Barcelona youngster Xavi Espart is expected to start at right-back against Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico after impressing head coach Hansi Flick during the Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain.
According to reports, the 19-year-old academy graduate has convinced Flick that he deserves to retain his place in the starting lineup for the crucial encounter at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Espart’s impressive performance against PSG came despite Barcelona’s 4-2 defeat in Paris. The teenager showed defensive discipline against dangerous winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and also made an impact in attack by scoring a goal.
His display has reportedly strengthened his chances of starting against Real Madrid, particularly with Jules Kounde unlikely to be fit enough to feature from the beginning.
Kounde is recovering from an ankle sprain and is not expected to be ready to start on Sunday. Even if the French defender makes the matchday squad, he could be limited to a substitute appearance.
Espart’s recent performances have attracted attention from Flick, who has also been impressed by the youngster’s ability to operate at left-back. He has been competing with established options, including Joao Cancelo and Alejandro Balde, for opportunities in the team.
However, his performance against PSG appears to have strengthened his position on the right side of the defence.
The teenager could face another demanding challenge against Real Madrid, with Yan Diomande identified as a potential opponent on his flank following Vinicius Junior’s suspension.
Espart will also need to manage some physical concerns after reportedly experiencing quadriceps discomfort before the PSG match and taking a heavy knock to his ankle during the game. Neither issue is expected to prevent him from featuring against Madrid, according to the report.
Unless there is a late change, Barcelona are expected to field the same defensive line that started against PSG, with Espart at right-back, Cancelo on the left and Pau Cubarsi partnering Gerard Martin in central defence.
