Manchester United Make Decision on Sacking Michael Carrick Before Sunday Match Against Bournemouth

According to a report by Metro on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United have decided to give Michael Carrick another opportunity to lead the team in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth, despite growing pressure following their disappointing results.

Carrick’s position has come under increased scrutiny after United suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result has intensified criticism of the team’s performances and raised further doubts about whether the manager can turn the club’s fortunes around.

United have also struggled domestically, collecting just seven points from their opening seven Premier League matches. Their only league victory during that period came against newly promoted Ipswich Town in August, leaving supporters concerned about the team’s direction.

Despite the disappointing start, the club are reportedly unwilling to make an immediate managerial change before Sunday’s encounter. Carrick will therefore have another opportunity to improve performances and demonstrate that he can guide United out of their current difficulties.

Preparations for the Bournemouth fixture are continuing, with Carrick expected to remain in charge for the match. However, his position could become increasingly precarious if the team fails to produce a convincing response.

Meanwhile, reports suggest Manchester United have started considering possible alternatives should they eventually decide to part ways with their current manager.

Former Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe is among the names reportedly being discussed. His previous experience in the Premier League, including his spell at Bournemouth, could make him a candidate if the position becomes available.

Antonio Conte has also been linked with the job. The Italian has previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur and is known for his demanding approach to management. However, concerns have reportedly emerged over whether his strong personality and methods would fit the club’s preferred long-term structure.

For now, Carrick’s immediate focus is on preparing his players for Sunday’s match. Another disappointing result could intensify calls for a managerial change, while a victory would offer him some breathing room and help restore confidence within the squad.

The Bournemouth fixture could therefore prove significant for Carrick as he attempts to steady Manchester United’s campaign and convince the club’s hierarchy that he remains the right person to lead the team forward.
