Matheus Cunha fumes as Michael Carrick blocks him from joining in Man Utd celebrations

According to a report by The Sun on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Matheus Cunha was left furious after Manchester United manager Michael Carrick appeared to send him straight down the tunnel rather than allow him to join his teammates in celebrating their dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma.

Manchester United staged an impressive comeback at Old Trafford on Tuesday night after falling two goals behind against the Italian side.

Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty in the 58th minute to give the Red Devils a lifeline before Cunha scored the equaliser and the winning goal to complete a memorable turnaround.

However, the Brazilian forward's night ended controversially after he was sent off in stoppage time.

Cunha initially received a yellow card for removing his shirt and jumping into the crowd to celebrate his winning goal.

He was subsequently shown a second yellow card in the first minute of added time following a late tackle, leaving United to see out the closing moments with 10 players.

Despite his dismissal, Manchester United managed to protect their advantage and secure all three points.

However, Cunha's attempt to celebrate with his teammates after the final whistle was quickly stopped by Carrick.

The former Wolves forward returned to the pitch to join the celebrations, but the United manager appeared furious with his behaviour and instructed him to return to the dressing room.

Cunha looked visibly unhappy with the decision as he walked towards the tunnel, with a club official accompanying him. The Brazilian also appeared to shout angrily towards the pitch.

According to the IFAB Laws of the Game, players who receive a red card must leave the vicinity of the field of play and the technical area. This meant Cunha was not permitted to return to the pitch after his dismissal, even following the final whistle.

Carrick, meanwhile, remained pleased with his team's determination to recover from their difficult position and secure an important victory.

Speaking after the match, the United manager revealed that he had encouraged his players to remain positive at half-time rather than allow frustration to affect their performance.

"At half-time, I was wanting them to be more positive if anything, and not get too disappointed and frustrated," Carrick said.

He added that his players needed to keep searching for solutions whenever things went wrong.

Carrick also praised the special atmosphere at Old Trafford, explaining how one important moment could change the mood around the stadium.
