According to a report by Football365 on Tuesday October 27, 2026, Manchester United are considering activating the one-year extension in Bruno Fernandes’ contract as the club weigh up the possibility of selling their captain next summer.
According to reports, United’s hierarchy are looking at extending the Portuguese midfielder’s deal to protect his transfer value ahead of a potential departure from Old Trafford.
Fernandes’ current contract expires in June 2027, but the club have the option to extend it by another year. Activating the clause would give United greater control over his future and help them avoid losing him for a reduced fee.
The development comes amid growing tension between Fernandes and head coach Michael Carrick following United’s disappointing results this season.
The 32-year-old publicly criticised Carrick’s tactics after the 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como last week, sparking debate over his position as club captain.
Carrick subsequently dropped Fernandes to the bench for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Bournemouth. United went on to lose 3-0 at Old Trafford, with the midfielder remaining an unused substitute throughout the match.
Fernandes has also faced criticism over his recent performances, having gone five consecutive Premier League matches without scoring or providing an assist after recording a hat-trick in the 5-2 victory over Ipswich Town.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, the midfielder remains an important figure at Old Trafford. He registered a Premier League-record 21 assists last season, further underlining his influence in United’s attack.
Saudi Pro League clubs are also expected to maintain their interest in the Portuguese international. Fernandes rejected a reported £100 million offer from Al-Hilal in June 2025, choosing to remain at Manchester United.
However, interest from Saudi Arabia could present the club with another opportunity to secure a substantial transfer fee in January or next summer.
United are now preparing for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea, with Fernandes’ involvement in the starting lineup still uncertain.
Although the club are reportedly considering extending his contract to preserve his market value, United have not officially confirmed plans to sell their captain. His future could become a major talking point as the club assess their options ahead of the next transfer window.
