Nigerian forward Oluebube Umejiaku produced a memorable performance as the Flamingos defeated Japan 2-1 to win the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco, securing a historic achievement for Nigerian and African football.
According to a report by Flashscore on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Umejiaku played an important role in Nigeria's victory, scoring the team's second goal and helping the young Nigerian side overcome a determined Japanese team in the championship encounter.
The forward found the back of the net in the 47th minute, shortly after the second half began, to give Nigeria a comfortable 2-0 advantage. Her goal came after Awawu Bashiru had opened the scoring for the Flamingos in the 39th minute.
Umejiaku demonstrated excellent composure during the scoring opportunity, cleverly lifting the ball over Japan's advancing goalkeeper to extend Nigeria's lead. The goal proved particularly important as it gave the Nigerian team greater confidence and strengthened their position in the final.
Japan, however, refused to give up without a fight. The Asian side eventually found a response in the 80th minute when Fuki Ito scored to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The late goal increased the pressure on Nigeria as Japan pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Nevertheless, the Flamingos remained organised defensively and successfully protected their advantage until the referee brought the encounter to an end.
Umejiaku's contribution in the final was a fitting conclusion to an impressive campaign in Morocco. Before the decisive match, the young striker had already established herself as one of Nigeria's important attacking players, with three goals recorded in the tournament according to FIFA's statistics.
She was also among four Nigerian players who had scored at least twice before the final, highlighting the attacking strength that helped the team progress through the competition.
Throughout the tournament, Umejiaku displayed her ability to create dangerous attacking opportunities, find spaces in opposing defences and make important contributions in front of goal. Her performance against Japan further demonstrated her potential as one of Nigeria's promising young football talents.
The Flamingos' journey to the championship was not without difficulties. Nigeria began the competition with a defeat against Poland, raising concerns about the team's chances of progressing beyond the group stage.
However, the young Nigerian players responded positively, securing important victories over Puerto Rico and Korea DPR to revive their campaign and advance to the knockout rounds.
They continued their impressive run by overcoming Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil, booking their place in the final against Japan.
Their eventual 2-1 victory over Japan completed a remarkable turnaround and secured Nigeria's first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title.
The achievement also made Nigeria the first African nation to win the competition, representing a significant milestone for women's football on the continent.
For Umejiaku, scoring in a World Cup final and helping her country secure such a historic trophy will remain one of the most memorable moments of her young career.
The Flamingos' triumph is also expected to provide further encouragement for the development of women's football in Nigeria, while bringing greater attention to the emerging talents within the country's youth football system.
