According to a report by Barca Universal on Thursday October 22, 2026, Barcelona have reportedly started negotiations to extend and improve Brian Farinas’ contract despite the young midfielder yet to make a competitive first-team appearance under manager Hansi Flick this season.
According to Catalunya Radio, the Spanish champions are considering extending his current agreement by one or two years, potentially keeping him at the club until 2029 or 2030.
The proposed deal could also include improved wages and a higher release clause, demonstrating Barcelona’s intention to protect the future of the promising midfielder amid growing competition for places.
Farinas’ existing contract runs until the summer of 2028, meaning the Catalan club want to secure his long-term future before he approaches the final stages of his current agreement.
The midfielder earned promotion to Barcelona’s senior squad after impressing during pre-season, with his versatility and performances attracting the attention of Flick and the coaching staff.
The 20-year-old joined Barcelona’s youth academy in 2018 after arriving from Villarreal and was officially promoted to the first team this season, receiving the prestigious number four shirt.
Farinas particularly impressed during pre-season when Frenkie de Jong was sidelined through injury, demonstrating qualities that strengthened his chances of becoming part of Barcelona’s long-term midfield plans.
However, despite receiving promotion, the youngster has struggled to secure competitive minutes, with Barcelona’s intense midfield competition limiting his opportunities to establish himself in Flick’s senior squad.
According to the report, his situation could become increasingly important during the January transfer window if he continues to remain on the sidelines without regular first-team opportunities.
That possibility does not automatically mean Barcelona intend to sell him, but the midfielder’s need for consistent playing time could influence discussions about his immediate future.
Barcelona must now balance their desire to retain a promising academy graduate with the importance of providing a realistic pathway into the senior team, ensuring his development continues.
Although an improved contract would strengthen the club’s position, Farinas will also want greater opportunities to demonstrate his abilities and establish himself under Flick during the remainder of the season.
