Jamie Carragher issues Arsenal verdict after 'absolutely outstanding' Liverpool win

According to a report by Evening Standard on Monday, November 2, 2026, former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has showered praise on Arsenal’s defensive unit after their impressive 1-0 victory over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, describing their performance as “absolutely outstanding”.

Arsenal secured a memorable away victory through Kai Havertz’s first-half strike, ending their 14-year wait for a Premier League win at Anfield.

The decisive moment arrived in the 16th minute when Havertz connected with an excellent delivery from Declan Rice at the far post to put Mikel Arteta’s side ahead.

Following the goal, the Gunners demonstrated remarkable defensive discipline, successfully resisting Liverpool’s attempts to find an equaliser throughout the encounter.

The victory was also significant in the Premier League title race, as Arsenal extended their advantage over second-placed Manchester City to three points.

Reacting to the result during his appearance on Sky Sports, Carragher praised Arsenal’s defensive organisation, suggesting that no team in England, and possibly Europe, currently possesses a stronger defensive structure.

Although he acknowledged Liverpool’s impressive performance, the former defender explained that breaking down Arteta’s well-organised team remained a difficult task.

Carragher said: “No, it was a brilliant game and both teams can take a lot from it. Liverpool played really well.

“They didn’t do enough but you are playing against, defensively, the best team in this country, arguably in Europe and that is without the best centre-back in the world in Saliba.”

The pundit also drew comparisons between Arsenal’s current defensive partnership and the legendary back four that helped the club achieve major success in 1989 and 1991.

He suggested that the present group of defenders are gradually earning recognition alongside the famous defensive generation led by Tony Adams.

“When you think about Arsenal winning titles, especially in ’89 and ‘91 with Tony Adams and that famous back four, I think we’re getting close to putting this back four up against that and in that conversation,” he added.

Carragher’s assessment was influenced by Arsenal’s ability to contain Liverpool’s attacking threat despite the quality and financial investment within the home side’s forward line.

Liverpool registered 17 attempts on goal but failed to record a single shot on target against David Raya, highlighting the effectiveness of Arsenal’s defensive organisation.

Alexis Mac Allister missed a promising opportunity shortly before the interval when his close-range header went over the crossbar. Alexander Isak also appealed for a penalty after Jurrien Timber appeared to pull his shirt inside the penalty area, but Arsenal managed to maintain their advantage.

The Gunners remained composed until the final whistle, securing three valuable points from a difficult away fixture.

Carragher’s comments further underline the growing reputation of Arteta’s defensive unit, which could prove crucial as Arsenal continue their pursuit of the Premier League title.
