2026 FIFA U-17 WWC: How the tallest player of the competition Ijirigho helped Nigeria beat Mexico

According to a report by Premium Times published on Friday, October 30, 2026, Nigeria's Flamingos goalkeeper Jane Ijirigho delivered an outstanding performance to help her country defeat Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Morocco.

The 1.92-metre-tall goalkeeper, who is the tallest player at the ongoing tournament, produced several impressive saves that proved crucial to Nigeria's victory and secured the team's qualification for the quarter-finals.

Ijirigho immediately demonstrated her importance to the Nigerian side when she denied Mexico an early opportunity to take the lead. Just six minutes into the encounter, Mexican captain Citlalli Reyes found space inside the penalty area and attempted to score.

Reyes had already registered two goals during the group stage and appeared dangerous once again. However, the Nigerian goalkeeper reacted quickly, diving low to prevent her effort from finding the back of the net.

The Flamingos shot-stopper continued to demonstrate her quality as the match progressed, producing another remarkable intervention to stop Kemberly Garcia's long-distance attempt. Ijirigho stretched out to divert the powerful effort onto the crossbar, preventing Mexico from getting back into the contest.

Her contributions became particularly important as Mexico increased the pressure in the closing stages in an attempt to overturn Nigeria's advantage. Nevertheless, the Flamingos maintained their composure to secure an important victory.

Nigeria's head coach, Akeem Busari, was delighted with the goalkeeper's contribution and praised her consistency throughout the competition.

“She’s awesome,” Busari said.

He further highlighted her determination, positive attitude and commitment to representing the country.

“She has been fantastic in every tournament. She has a great mentality, and she really wants to do her bit, and she’s enjoying doing her best for Nigeria.”

Defender Azeezat Oduntan also praised the goalkeeper after the final whistle, expressing her admiration for the impressive display.

“She was fantastic,” Oduntan said, blowing a kiss towards Ijirigho. “I love her!”

Meanwhile, Ijirigho expressed satisfaction with her important interventions but credited the entire team for their collective performance.

“I was very happy to make the save,” she told FIFA.

“The team did very well, honestly, I’m very proud of them. We came out with a great team spirit, and we know we have the quality.”

Her impressive showing has further strengthened Nigeria's confidence as the Flamingos prepare for their quarter-final challenge in Morocco.
