Footballer’s Death: Goalkeeper Owono Considers Drastic Decision After Fatal Collision

Equatorial Guinea goalkeeper Jesus Owono is reportedly considering bringing his professional football career to an end following the death of Spanish striker Jesus de Miguel after the two players collided during a match.

Owono was playing for Andorra FC when he collided with De Miguel while attempting to clear the ball during their match on Monday, November 2, 2026.

The Tenerife forward was left on the pitch after the collision and was subsequently taken to hospital, where he died the following morning from what was described as accidental chest trauma.

The incident has reportedly taken a heavy emotional toll on Owono, who was sent off during the match following the challenge.

According to PUNCH, citing Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, the goalkeeper is now considering retiring from professional football as he struggles to cope with the striker's death.

Ana Maye, a close friend of Owono and general coordinator of the Equatorial Guinea men's national team, said the goalkeeper remained deeply affected despite efforts by those around him to provide emotional support.

She explained that Owono was particularly troubled by the loss suffered by De Miguel's family, especially his young son and widow.

“No matter how much we tell him, he's deeply saddened.

“He's very affected, especially for Jesús Miguel's one-and-a-half-year-old son and for his widow. He doesn't know how to handle all of this,” she said.

Owono, who has been receiving psychological support from his team, also released a statement expressing his grief over the incident.

In a social media post, the goalkeeper described the period as the most difficult days of his life, admitting that he was struggling to understand what had happened.

“These are the most difficult days of my life. I struggle to find the words, and I find it very hard to process what has happened.

“I feel enormous pain at the loss of Jesus. I think of him, his family, and all the people who loved him. I know there will be many questions to address, and I will face whatever comes with the utmost respect.

“But right now, honestly, I cannot think about anything other than Jesus and the pain we are experiencing. Rest in peace, Jesus,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, De Miguel was laid to rest in his hometown of Navahermosa, in Spain's Toledo province, on Thursday, November 5.

Hundreds of mourners, including relatives and prominent figures in Spanish football, attended the funeral to pay their final respects.

Among those present were Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente.

Maye also disclosed that Owono's family had faced abuse following the incident, with some people reportedly directing insults at his relatives both online and in person.

She said some individuals had called the goalkeeper's brother a murderer, while others had subjected him to insults.

The development has added to the emotional burden on Owono as he continues to receive support following the tragic loss of the Spanish forward.
