According to a report by Metro on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has advised Michael Carrick to give Shea Lacey a starting opportunity instead of Amad Diallo following the teenager’s impressive contribution during their Champions League victory over AS Roma.
United recovered from a disappointing first half, overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory at Old Trafford. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty before Matheus Cunha scored twice to complete their comeback.
However, Lacey’s introduction in the 75th minute proved particularly influential. The 19-year-old immediately brought energy and creativity to United’s right flank, producing an excellent pass that allowed Cunha to score the winning goal against the Italian opposition.
His impressive touches, quick combinations and attacking confidence provided something United had struggled to find earlier. Amad, meanwhile, failed to make a significant impact before being substituted, continuing his disappointing run in front of goal.
The Ivory Coast international has also struggled to deliver consistently, missing important opportunities during the recent defeat against Chelsea. His last goal for United came in December last year, while he has managed only two assists across competitions since then.
Lacey’s growing influence could strengthen his chances of securing regular first-team opportunities. The academy graduate previously announced himself with an impressive strike against Brighton in the Carabao Cup during September.
Former United captain Rooney believes the youngster deserves greater responsibility, particularly because of the attacking quality he demonstrated against Roma.
Speaking about his decisive contribution, Rooney praised his technical ability, saying: “That’s a great touch inside and a wonderful pass, and the finish is incredible.”
He also questioned Amad’s attacking output, explaining that although the winger possesses quality, his inability to consistently produce goals and assists remains concerning.
Rooney added: “Amad does some really good things, but it’s that end product, that is what takes you to the next level.”
He believes Lacey possesses the creativity and quality United desperately needed against Roma.
