Barcelona Reopen January Transfer Plans After PSG Defeat Exposes Key Weakness – report

According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, after their 4-2 Champions League loss to Paris Saint-Germain revealed major deficiencies in their defense, Barcelona is supposedly reevaluating their January transfer plans.

In order to bolster Hansi Flick's squad for the second half of the season, the Catalan club is considering signing an experienced full-back or center-back. It may be difficult for them to close a deal, though, due to their financial problems.

Despite Ronald Araujo's loan departure and Andreas Christensen's ongoing fitness problems, Barcelona opted not to sign a central defender during the summer transfer window, suggesting a possible shift in strategy.

The team's defensive depth has come under scrutiny following their loss in Paris, as PSG were able to capitalize on multiple dangerous opportunities thanks to holes in the defense. It was tough for Flick's team to keep their opponents at bay due to defensive mistakes and issues in the wide areas.

Joan Garcia, Barcelona's goalkeeper, made a string of crucial stops to keep the score from getting even worse. Still, the outcome has added fuel to the fire of those who worry the club's offensive prowess won't be enough to compete with the best teams in Europe unless their defense is rock solid.

Instead of working with his current roster, Flick had the chance to bolster his defensive options during the summer. Even though the team's recent results have shown the limitations of his choices, he made that decision due to financial constraints and his faith in the available players.

The injuries sustained by right backs Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia have further complicated Barcelona's predicament. The manager's options in defense have been further limited by Christensen's ongoing fitness issues.

Eric Garcia's versatility and defensive organization skills make his absence all the more noticeable. Flick has tactical flexibility thanks to his ability to play right back or center back, which is particularly useful when the team needs to keep its defensive shape during transitions.

Consequently, Pau Cubarsi has been given more responsibility in the back line for Barcelona. Given the club's current defensive situation, they are crossing their fingers that the young defender stays healthy.

In light of this, Barcelona may find the extra stability they require to continue pursuing their campaign goals if they sign a seasoned defender in January.

Any possible agreement, however, would be severely hampered by the club's financial constraints.

Due to their salary cap restrictions, Barcelona may have to trade an existing player before acquiring a new one. Reports have surfaced suggesting Alejandro Balde could be leaving the club in January, but the exact nature of those plans is still up in the air.
