Nigeria’s Flamingos have made history by winning the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Japan 2-1 in the final, while Korea DPR claimed the bronze medal with a commanding 6-0 victory over Brazil in the third-place match.
According to a report by Flashscore on Saturday, November 7, 2026, the Flamingos secured their maiden title at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco. Their triumph also made Nigeria the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The final saw the Nigerian youngsters deliver an impressive performance against Japan, demonstrating determination and attacking quality to secure the historic victory.
Awawu Bashiru gave Nigeria the lead in the 39th minute with a long-range effort from outside the penalty area. Japan goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki failed to control the shot properly, allowing the ball to cross the goal line and put the Flamingos ahead.
Nigeria continued their impressive display after the restart, extending their advantage just two minutes into the second half. Oluebube Umejiaku found the net in the 47th minute to make it 2-0 and put the African side in control.
Japan refused to give up and pulled a goal back through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute, setting up a tense finish. However, Nigeria remained disciplined at the back and held on to their lead until the final whistle to secure the championship.
Meanwhile, Korea DPR finished third after overwhelming Brazil 6-0 in the playoff for the bronze medal.
Kim Won-sim opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Ri Ui-gyong increased the advantage ahead of half-time. Korea DPR continued their dominance after the break, with Ri Ye-rim adding another goal.
Ri Ui-gyong subsequently completed her brace, while Yu Jong-hyang and Ri Kyong-im also found the net to seal an emphatic victory. Brazil finished fourth, while Japan settled for the runners-up position.
The final-day results brought the tournament in Morocco to a close, with Nigeria lifting the trophy, Japan taking silver and Korea DPR securing bronze.
Nigeria’s achievement was particularly remarkable considering that the Flamingos began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat against Poland. They recovered from that setback by recording victories over Puerto Rico, Korea DPR, Mexico, Venezuela and Brazil before overcoming Japan in the final.
Their six successive wins after the opening defeat completed an impressive turnaround and secured a historic championship.
The triumph represents a major milestone for Nigerian youth football, as the Flamingos have brought Africa its first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title.
