According to a report by Metro on Thursday October 22, 2026, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has launched a scathing assessment of the club's current situation, admitting that winning trophies has become increasingly difficult at Old Trafford following their humiliating defeat to Como in the Champions League.
United suffered a disappointing 4-0 loss against Como on Wednesday night, extending their difficult run of form and increasing the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.
The result was reportedly Manchester United's heaviest Champions League defeat since their 4-0 loss to Barcelona in November 1994. The Red Devils have also struggled for consistency this season, recording just two victories across their opening matches in all competitions.
Speaking to Sky Sport Italy after the defeat, Fernandes criticised the club's tendency to focus on its glorious past rather than concentrate on building a successful future.
“Everyone at the club must understand that it's not the same thing any more,” the Portuguese midfielder said. “We're not in the past and we need to look at the future. We need to do things different in the present.”
Fernandes also admitted that the club's recent struggles have made it difficult for players arriving at Old Trafford to achieve the success expected of them.
“Unfortunately for us, as a group of players, every time you come to this club you think about winning trophies and winning games, and being in the highest level but unfortunately it's been very difficult at this club in the last few years,” he added.
His comments reflect the growing frustration surrounding Manchester United, who have struggled to maintain the standards associated with their successful years under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
The captain's remarks also raise questions about the club's long-term direction, with Fernandes suggesting that significant changes are required if United are to return to competing consistently for major honours.
Meanwhile, Carrick disagreed with his captain's assessment when asked about the comments in his own interview with Sky Sport Italy.
The United manager pointed to the team's performances after his arrival in January, arguing that the squad had previously demonstrated its ability to produce good results over an extended period.
However, Carrick acknowledged that the team's start to the current campaign had been far below expectations.
With pressure mounting following the defeat to Como, Manchester United must now find a way to improve their performances and restore confidence among supporters.
