Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has disclosed that he recommended Michael Carrick to the club during discussions about its managerial position, describing the former midfielder as someone with the character and ability required to lead the team.

According to a post shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on his X account on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Solskjaer spoke positively about Carrick when Manchester United consulted him, expressing confidence in his former assistant's qualities.

“When I spoke with Man United, I also spoke highly of Michael Carrick. I said: If you choose him, you're getting a good man,” Solskjaer said.

The Norwegian's endorsement reflects the close professional relationship they developed during their time together at Old Trafford. Carrick served as part of Solskjaer's coaching team after retiring from professional football in 2018.

Before moving into coaching, Carrick enjoyed a successful playing career at Manchester United, where he spent 12 years following his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. During his time with the club, he won five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the FA Cup, two League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup.

He also worked under other managers, including Jose Mourinho, before eventually taking responsibility for the team following Solskjaer's departure in November 2021.

Carrick managed United for three matches in an interim capacity, recording two victories and one draw before leaving when Ralf Rangnick took over.

He later began his managerial career at Middlesbrough in October 2022. During his first season, he guided the Championship side to the play-off semi-finals, earning praise for his attacking football and approach to developing young players.

Although his spell at Middlesbrough ended in June 2025, Carrick has continued to attract attention because of his experience and previous connection with Manchester United.

Solskjaer's latest comments underline his belief that Carrick understands the club's traditions, expectations and the responsibilities associated with managing a major football institution.
