Spanish football club CD Tenerife has announced the death of their striker, Jesus de Miguel, following injuries he sustained in a collision with an FC Andorra goalkeeper during a Spanish second-division match.
The 30-year-old died at 8:00 am on Tuesday, hours after the incident, which occurred towards the closing stages of the encounter.
In a statement announcing his death, Tenerife said, “Broken with pain, with a lump in our throat and unable to believe this is real, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death, at 8:00 am (7am GMT), of Jesus de Miguel Alameda.
“No words can ease the pain; nothing can lessen this great feeling of sadness. Our thoughts are with the family, his close friends and Tenerife fans, who today are grieving over this terrible news.”
De Miguel sustained the injuries after being brought down by Equatorial Guinea international goalkeeper Jesus Owono, who had rushed out of his goal to challenge him in the middle of the pitch.
The incident occurred when the match was level at 2-2. Owono was shown a red card following the collision, while the match was later abandoned.
Spanish media reports said De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated after the incident. However, Tenerife subsequently disclosed that his condition had “worsened neurologically” before confirming his death.
The striker had spent just over a season with Tenerife, having joined the club in the summer of 2025 from Castellon.
Reacting to the tragedy, former Barcelona defender and Andorra’s majority shareholder, Gerard Pique, expressed his condolences in a social media post.
“I am so deeply sorry. Rest in peace, Jesus,” Pique wrote.
FC Andorra also expressed sympathy over the loss, extending their “most sincere condolences” to De Miguel’s family, team-mates and Tenerife.
Several Spanish football clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, equally paid tribute to the late striker.
The Spanish football federation also mourned his death, calling the news heartbreaking.
“Shattered by this sad news, the Royal Spanish Football Federation wishes to express our deepest sorrow at his passing today,” the federation said in a statement.
