The NBA's 2026-27 season burst to life on Tuesday, October 20, with six Nigerian players taking the court on opening night. The league showcased its growing African presence, with more than 25 players boasting at least one Nigerian parent across all rosters.

A total of 125 international players from 43 countries spread across six continents featured in the opening-night lineups. This marked the sixth consecutive season with at least 120 international players and the 13th straight year with over 100 international competitors.

The Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat and Washington Wizards each led the league with seven international players apiece. Over 60 players with African birth or African-born parents suited up for the opening night.

Fola Folowosele, the NBA's country head in Nigeria, expressed his enthusiasm about the milestone. "We are excited to see a record six Nigerian players featured on opening-night rosters, alongside more than 20 second-generation Nigerians in the NBA this season," he said recently.

The 2026-27 season represents a watershed moment for African basketball fans, with 75 games scheduled for primetime broadcast across the continent for the first time. The league will reach viewers in 214 countries and territories in more than 50 languages.

On opening night, Detroit's spirited Pistons squad stole the show against Boston's Celtics, rallying from 22 points down to win 121-113. A devastating 23-0 fourth-quarter run proved the difference, despite Paul George's game-high 38 points in his Celtics debut.

Six players with direct Nigerian heritage appeared on opening-night rosters: Ugonna Onyenso (Detroit Pistons), Charles Bassey (Golden State Warriors), Adem Bona (Philadelphia 76ers), Precious Achiuwa (Sacramento Kings), Josh Okogie (Utah Jazz) and Felix Okpara (Washington Wizards).

Several other stars carry Nigerian heritage through their parents or relatives. Deandre Ayton (Washington Wizards) hails from the Bahamas, while Giannis Antetokounmpo (Miami Heat) represents Greece.

Tristan Enaruna (Cleveland Cavaliers) was born in the Netherlands, as were Tobi Lawal (Dallas Mavericks) and OG Anunoby (New York Knicks), who came from the United Kingdom. These connections underscore basketball's deep roots across the diaspora.
