The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has hailed Nigeria’s Under-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, for making history by winning the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, describing the players as the country’s “Golden Girls”.

Akpabio said the victory had not only brought honour to Nigeria but also made the country the first African nation to win the competition.

In a congratulatory message issued by his Media Office and signed by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, on Sunday, the Senate President said the achievement was a proud moment for the entire African continent.

“By achieving this remarkable feat, you have made Nigeria the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. This is not just a victory for Nigerian football; it is a proud moment for the entire African continent,” he said.

Akpabio commended the players for their talent, determination, resilience and teamwork, noting that their success was a product of hard work and commitment by the players, coaches and technical crew.

“Your courage, determination, discipline, teamwork and fighting spirit have brought immense joy and honour to our nation. You have demonstrated that with talent, hard work and belief, no dream is beyond reach,” he said.

He further noted that the victory had inspired a new generation of young girls across Nigeria and Africa to aspire to greatness.

“You have not only won a trophy; you have won the hearts of millions of Nigerians and inspired a generation of young girls to dream big, believe in themselves and reach for greatness.

“You are our pride, our champions and our Golden Girls!” Akpabio added.

The Senate President said the team had raised Nigeria’s flag high and demonstrated that African girls could compete and achieve success at the highest level of international football.

Describing the Flamingos as history makers, Akpabio congratulated the players, coaches, technical crew and others who contributed to the triumph.

“The world has heard our victory song!” he said.
