Flamingos face Venezuela in U-17 World Cup quarter-finals

Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, will take on Venezuela in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco on Sunday, November 1, as both sides battle for a place in the semi-finals.

The encounter is scheduled for Pitch 4 of the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Salé, Rabat, at 6 p.m. local time (7 p.m. Nigerian time).

The Flamingos began their campaign with a 2-1 defeat to Poland but recovered strongly, recording a 2-0 victory over tournament debutants Puerto Rico before defeating defending champions North Korea 3-1 to advance from Group B.

The Nigerian side subsequently secured a place in the quarter-finals after edging Mexico in the Round of 16, keeping their hopes of progressing beyond their previous tournament performance alive.

Venezuela, meanwhile, returned to the competition after a 10-year absence. The South Americans lost their opening fixture 2-0 to France but bounced back with a victory over Zambia before producing a major upset against Germany, securing a 1-0 win in the Round of 16.

The Venezuelans will be seeking to maintain their impressive record at the competition, having reached the semi-finals in their previous two appearances.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s encounter, Flamingos head coach, Hakeem Busari, acknowledged Venezuela’s quality, describing them as a strong opponent while expressing confidence in his team’s preparation.

Busari said his players would approach the quarter-final with the same determination they had shown in previous matches, stressing the importance of maintaining the right mentality and competing for every ball.

He urged the players to remain focused, take their chances and avoid unnecessary pressure, while maintaining possession and fighting to regain the ball whenever they lose it.

The coach also warned that Venezuela’s South American style of play could present a physical challenge, particularly in individual duels.

A victory for Nigeria would secure the Flamingos a place in the semi-finals, while Venezuela will be aiming to continue their impressive run and reach the last four for a third consecutive time.
