₦14m prize earmarked for  2026 Obasa Games

The organisers of the 2026 Obasa Games have earmarked a total prize pool of ₦14 million for the winners of the fourth edition of the multi-sport competition.

The grassroots tournament, organised by Kings Sports International in honour of the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, runs from November 7 to December 5 across Lagos State.

Participants are drawn from private and public secondary schools across all 57 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state. The Games will feature seven sports: football, boxing, chess, Scrabble, table tennis, athletics and Ayo Olopon. The organisers aim to discover and nurture emerging sporting talent.

Under the theme “One Lagos, Many Talents, One Brighter Future”, the 2026 edition will give young athletes a platform to compete for top honours.

Speaking at a media briefing yesterday  at the Agege Local Government Secretariat, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Dr Moshood Ajibola, said the seven sports will share the ₦14 million. Football gets the largest portion, ₦6 million. Table tennis and boxing receive ₦2 million each, while chess, Scrabble, Ayo Olopon and athletics get ₦1 million each.

“We believe that students can successfully combine education and football. With both private and public schools across all 57 LGAs and LCDAs participating in the Games, our core objective is to develop a sustainable talent pool from Agege, Lagos, and Nigeria at large. Now in its fourth edition, I can confidently confirm that the competition has truly achieved its purpose, as evidenced by the remarkable number of talents discovered in previous editions,” Ajibola said.

He disclosed that the football tournament will start the Games on November 7, with the other sports kicking off on November 16. Football will pause to let the other events progress, and the district elimination phase will end on November 24. The finals for the other six sports are scheduled for December 2.

Ajibola explained that 62 Under-18 teams will contest the football event in two phases, starting with a knockout round before 32 teams advance to the group stage.

The organisers have also adopted the Lagos State Ministry of Education’s district structure for accrediting athletes from public and private schools. They said the competition forms part of ongoing efforts to promote grassroots sports development, create opportunities for young athletes and strengthen the sporting culture across Lagos State.
