English League Two side Fleetwood Town Football Club delivered perhaps the biggest win in the club’s history by beating English Premier League champions Arsenal 5-3 on penalties in the Carabao Cup.
The shock result pushed Fleetwood Town into the quarterfinals of the competition while delivering a shocking exit to the 2025-2026 UEFA Champions League finalists.
The game was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time forcing the match into a penalty shootout; Arsenal however, ended the contest with 10 men after teenager Max Dowman was shown a red card in the 85th minute.
Bruno Guimarães had his penalty attempt saved by Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch that set up 19 year old Northern Ireland centre back Conor Haughey to score the game sealing penalty kick.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the big win, Jay Lynch said Fleetwood aimed to replicate the shock result fellow lowly ranked Grimsby Town recorded last season to eliminate Manchester United from the competition.
“My voice has gone from organising the defence. The whole team throughout the game was magnificent. To beat the English champions – credit to these lads.”
“We took heart from Grimsby beating Man Utd last year. We kind of compared it. Amazing for the club, the town. Honestly it means everything to everyone” Lynch said.
