Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies boosted their CAF Women’s Champions League title ambitions with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Cameroon's Lekie FC on Matchday 2, a result that sent the South African champions to the top of Group B.
After being frustrated in their opening goalless draw against hosts Masar, Sundowns knew only a win would strengthen their bid for a place in the knockout stages and they delivered when it mattered most.
Refilwe Tholakele broke the deadlock three minutes before the break, applying the finishing touch to Ronnel Donnelly's assist to hand the Brazilians a deserved 1-0 lead at halftime.
Lekie fought back after the restart and drew level through substitute Nakoma Shalom, who capitalised on good work from Ajara Nchout to make it 1-1 and set up a tense finale.
With the match seemingly headed for a share of the spoils, Sundowns found the decisive breakthrough in the 88th minute when Karabo Dhlamini struck the winner to secure all three points.
The victory sees the two-time African champions move to the summit of Group B and puts them in a strong position heading into their final group-stage outing.
For Lekie, the defeat leaves them rooted to the bottom of the standings with their qualification hopes hanging by a thread going into the last round of fixtures.
Sundowns will now turn their attention to a crucial showdown against FUS Rabat as they continue their pursuit of a third CAF Women’s Champions League crown.
