A BBC Radio star has hit back at a fan after being subjected to an abusive rant and having his microphone snatched out of his hand. Adam Johnson, who presents sport and football commentary on BBC Radio Cumbria and co-hosts The Barrow Social on BBC Sounds, took to X to warn the fan to stay home for the next match.

Adam took to social media just hours after Barrow beat FC Halifax on Tuesday 27 October. He wrote: "I can take being shouted at. I can take banter. But physically taking my microphone out my hand and launching expletives at myself just because your side lost a game of football is too far. If losing a game makes someone go that far they should just pack it in and stay at home."

Fans were quick to support the commentator after he shared what happened. One wrote online that he hoped "the idiot" who hurled abuse at Adam was "found and banned" as they were a "disgrace" and his actions were "completely unacceptable".

Another added: "So sad when people can’t take a genuine defeat by a side that simply won’t lay down in the face of adversity. Let’s hope Halifax take some action against the idiot who gabbed your mic!"

A third said: "Disgraceful mate. If Halifax have anything about them, they should ban whoever did that. As you said, they've no business being at any football ground."

But, another accused Adam of "provoking" the fan. The X user said: "Shut up, you were provoking them." Another added that they wanted to hear the audio.

The Mirror went to both Adam and FC Halifax for comment about what happened. Adam clarified to the Mirror that he "wasn’t In any shape or form provoking anyone". He continued: "I was commentating on a game of football and was doing my job."

Adam has been a sports broadcaster for BBC Radio Cumbria for over eight years, starting in February of 2018. Last night, he was commenting on the match between Barrow and FC Halifax Town, which ended 3-2 to Barrow AFC, despite the team being two down going into the second half.

Elsewhere in the football world, Harry Kane became the first Englishman in 25 years to win the Ballon d'Or. The England captain received the award after enjoying his best season to date, scoring 61 times for Bayern Munich and another six times for the Three Lions at the World Cup, helping England finish third overall.

The last time an Englishman claimed the prestigious title was in 2001, when Michael Owen took the award. Speaking after claiming his award, Kane said: "I am almost speechless. Being here in London has made it extra special. Made it a good omen for me tonight. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. I can imagine it was tough this year.

"Some world-class players in the room tonight. Congratulations to all the winners and nominees tonight and impressive showing determination and hard work can really achieve."

Of England's World Cup matches, he said: "We had a special year. It wasn't the perfect year, but we had a load of great moments. We built a great bond together. The togetherness in the hotel in the World Cup. An honour to captain you and lead you. It makes me extremely proud. This one is for all of us for sure. Thomas Tuchel and the staff at England, again the leadership the way you drive us, the way you push standards is something to be admired."
