Manchester United are monitoring Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey ahead of the January transfer window as they look to strengthen their central defence, with the Fulham star emerging as a potential target, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
According to TEAMtalk, United have been impressed by Bassey’s performances for Fulham this season, with the 26-year-old reportedly among the club’s standout players despite their inconsistent form.
The interest comes after United conceded seven goals in their last two competitive matches, suffering a 4-1 defeat to Como in the Champions League before losing 3-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The results have exposed weaknesses in their defence, with questions surrounding the long-term options available to manager Michael Carrick.
Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are still developing, while Harry Maguire will turn 34 in March and is in the final year of his contract. Lisandro Martinez is also approaching the final year of his deal, while Matthijs de Ligt has only recently returned from a lengthy injury absence.
United are not alone in their interest, with Premier League rivals Everton and Newcastle United also reportedly monitoring the Nigerian international.
Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig are also said to be interested in signing the former Ajax defender.
Bassey’s Fulham contract expires at the end of the season, although the club have an option to extend it by another 12 months. His contractual situation could present interested clubs with an opportunity to negotiate a reduced transfer fee.
