Sunshine Spikers produced a dramatic five-set recovery to defeat NSCDC 3-2 on the sixth day of the CGC Volleyball Premier League in Abuja, sealing the deciding set 15-13 after a fiercely contested encounter.
The defeat brought NSCDC’s winning sequence to an end after previous victories over Vipers Spikers, Kada Emeralds, Benue Queens and Olalomi Royal Angels.
For Sunshine, the result provided an important response following earlier losses to CNS Spikers and Defence Spikers.
Defending women’s champions CNS Spikers ended their recent slump with a straight-sets win over Excelsior VC, recording set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-13.
The victory halted a two-game losing run for CNS, who had been beaten by COAS Spikers and Nigeria Customs Service. Before those setbacks, CNS had defeated Benue Queens, Kada Emeralds and NAF Rockets.
Nigeria Customs Service continued their strong campaign across both categories. In the men’s competition, Customs overcame Defence Spikers 3-0, winning 25-15, 25-20 and 25-22.
The men’s side remain unbeaten, having also accounted for Ajase Ipo, Nigeria Police Force, Offa VC and Nigeria Correctional Service.
Customs’ women also earned a 3-0 result against Anambra Queens, taking the sets 25-20, 25-15 and 25-13. That result followed earlier wins against NAF Rockets, Olalomi Royal Angels and CNS Spikers.
Customs and CNS remain the leading teams in the men’s standings during the second phase of the league, while COAS, VIP and Customs have been among the standout sides in the women’s division.
