Team Nigeria’s Pamela Bawa and Joy Lawrence couldn't have chosen a better day to bounce back and revive their hopes of a podium finish at the ongoing Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games (YOG).
The duo found their rhythm on Sunday, November 1st, marking the first day of both the month and the week. After losing to Japan in their opening match, they bounced back with an impressive 2-0 victory over the Egyptian duo of Marwa Mamdouh Salem Saleh and Karma Badawy in the beach volleyball event in Dakar, Senegal.
Bawa and Lawrence won the sets 21-19 and 21-11 to secure a straight-set victory and get their campaign back on track.
Having earlier suffered a 2-1 defeat to Japan, this victory over the Egyptian pair was a crucial response as they look to strengthen their position in the tournament.
The Nigerians demonstrated a vastly improved performance to overcome their Egyptian opponents, winning a tightly contested first set by a narrow two-point margin before completely dominating the second set by 10 points.
This 2-0 victory marks a positive step forward for the Nigerian pair as they look to build momentum for their remaining matches.
Elsewhere, Team Nigeria's Ojo Favour lost 1-3 to Egypt's Elbadawy Yara in her second singles match on Sunday, despite winning the first game 11-9.
The Nigerian, who previously lost her first singles match to a Czech opponent, could not sustain her early momentum. She dropped the next three games 9-11, 6-11, and 9-11, bringing an early end to her Youth Olympics singles campaign, though she still has one more classification game left to play later on Sunday.
