The Royal Spanish Football Federation has suspended Wednesday’s first-round Copa del Rey matches following a train collision in the province of Toledo that left dozens of people dead and injured.
Spanish clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and solidarity with those affected by the tragedy.
According to Spanish newspaper Marca, the suspension affects Wednesday’s fixtures, including Navalcarnero against Real Betis, Salamanca against Celta Vigo and Tavernes against Valencia, alongside several other matches.
The Federation has yet to decide whether Thursday’s fixtures will proceed, while new dates for the postponed matches have not been announced.
The accident occurred at around 8:54 a.m. local time on Wednesday between Los Yébenes and Urda in Toledo province. According to initial information reported by Spanish news agency Europa Press, citing sources at the Ministry of Transport, a train operated by state-owned company Renfe collided with a stationary train belonging to Iryo.
The impact caused several carriages to derail, with some tumbling down an embankment beside the railway line. High-speed rail services between Madrid and Andalusia were halted as emergency responders and ambulance teams rushed to the scene.
Initial reports indicated that dozens of people had been killed or injured, with concerns that the casualty figures could rise as rescue operations continued. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the collision, but the direct cause has yet to be established.
TVC News earlier reported that Real Madrid issued a statement expressing their “profound sorrow and grief” over the incident, offering condolences to the families and relatives of those who died and expressing support for the injured and others affected.
Barcelona also posted a message on its official X account, extending condolences to the families and friends of the victims, expressing solidarity with them and wishing those injured a speedy recovery.
Atlético Madrid said in their message: “We share the grief of the families and friends of the victims of the tragic accident that occurred this morning in the province of Toledo, we offer them our sincere condolences, and we wish a speedy recovery to all the injured”.
Spanish authorities deployed firefighters, civil protection personnel and medical teams to the crash site as rescue operations continued. Hospitals in nearby areas prepared to receive injured passengers, while the Castilla-La Mancha authorities activated their regional emergency plan.
The suspension of the Copa del Rey fixtures comes as Spanish football clubs join the wider expressions of mourning. Attention remains on the Federation’s decision regarding Thursday’s matches and the rescheduling of the postponed fixtures, as investigators continue to establish the circumstances of the collision.
