There has been a significant new update on Piero Ausilio amid reports that he could be Tottenham’s next sporting director.

Over the last couple of months, it has been widely reported that Piero Ausilio is the favourite to be appointed as Tottenham’s next sporting director after parting ways with Inter Milan at the end of the recent summer window.

In fact, it was even reported a week ago that De Zerbi wants Ausilio through the door soon so that he can help Tottenham in their striker hunt ahead of the January window.

Tottenham target Piero Ausilio spotted scouting 20-year-old Serie A starlet

According to a report in Sportmediaset, the former Inter director was in attendance at the Stadio Brianteo stadium in Monza on Monday night to watch them take on Cagliari.

Monza emerged 4-0 winners, and it is revealed that Ausilio made the trip to watch Alessandro Romano, who is on loan from Roma at Cagliari, who have an obligation to buy the player for €6.5m (£5.4m) next summer.

This has also been backed up by Calciomercato, which says that the 20-year-old was the main focus of attention for Ausilio as well as his ex-colleague Dario Baccin, who was also present on Inter’s behalf.

The report goes on to say that the Italy international is on the radar of several Premier League clubs ahead of January.

While the interested clubs are not named in the report, Ausilio’s presence there raises the possibility that Spurs are one of the clubs tracking the Roma academy graduate.

Why Ausilio is unlikely to be doing any scouting work for Spurs

It is important to mention that Tottenham sources have denied reports suggesting that Ausilio’s appointment is imminent.

Additionally, Spurs are well stocked for central midfielders, with Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray fighting it out for two spots when everyone is fit.

One would almost certainly expect Tottenham to prioritise signing a new number nine in January, particularly as it appears certain Richarlison will leave N17.
