Defending champions and emerging talents battle for honours as five Southeast states showcase their best players ahead of the National Sports Festival.

The fifth edition of the Bet9ja Foundation Southeast Zonal Badminton Championship has continued to produce exciting performances and unexpected results at the Nibo Civic Town Hall in Awka, Anambra State, with established players and emerging talents battling for honours across several categories.

The three-day championship attracted competitors from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, with spectators treated to closely contested matches in the men’s and women’s singles, doubles, mixed doubles and para-badminton events.

Organised by Southeast Badminton Outreach in conjunction with the Badminton Federation of Nigeria (BFN), and sponsored by the Bet9ja Foundation, the annual competition is being held under the theme, Discovery, Development and Excellence.

Beyond the battle for medals, the championship provides coaches and sports administrators with an opportunity to assess their athletes’ readiness for the forthcoming National Sports Festival.

One of the standout performances came from defending men’s singles champion Jovita of Anambra State, who underlined his determination to retain the title with a straight-games victory over Ebonyi State’s Elevate.

Jovita dominated the encounter, winning 21-15, 21-18 to advance in the competition.

However, the championship also witnessed some unexpected results, with Imo State’s Emeka Uzokwu, a 2017 finalist, overcoming Abia State’s Jeremiah 21-19, 21-18 in another keenly contested encounter.

Speaking after securing his passage to the next round, Uzokwu attributed his victory to hard work and determination, acknowledging that his opponent had provided a difficult challenge.

Enugu State’s Mmesoma also demonstrated remarkable resilience, defeating the experienced Onwe in three games, 21-19, 12-21, 21-16.

In another men’s singles encounter, Enugu State’s Chikamso, a semi-finalist in the previous edition, progressed after Abia State’s Dew retired through injury following a 21-11 opening-game defeat.

The women’s singles competition was equally entertaining, with Anambra State’s Blessing surviving a stern challenge from Abia State’s Akuoma.

In a contest lasting more than 35 minutes, Blessing eventually prevailed 21-18, 19-21, 21-16 to advance.

Imo State’s experienced Queen also impressed, brushing aside Abia State’s Chioma 21-7, 21-9, while Enugu State’s Uju, another semi-finalist from the previous edition, recorded a convincing 21-8, 21-9 victory over Anambra State’s Joan.

Para-badminton athletes shine

The para-badminton events also produced impressive performances, reinforcing the championship’s commitment to providing competitive opportunities for athletes with disabilities.

In the men’s wheelchair category, Abia State’s Ohaeri recorded a commanding 21-8, 21-3 victory over Imo State’s Emmanuel.

The women’s wheelchair competition saw Amarachi defeat Ebonyi State’s Akudo 21-16, 21-18, while Imo State’s Chioma delivered one of the most emphatic victories of the championship, overwhelming Anambra State’s Nwamaka 21-4, 21-1.

Abia State’s head badminton coach, Duru Ngozi-Philip, highlighted the challenges associated with developing young players but expressed satisfaction that the state’s contingent included both able-bodied and para-badminton athletes.

She noted the importance of providing opportunities for athletes across different categories to develop their skills and gain competitive experience.

The Head of Officials, Ifejika Godswill, also commended the organisers for sustaining the championship, describing the initiative as an important contribution to grassroots sports development in the Southeast.

He expressed optimism that competitions of this nature would help improve playing standards and strengthen badminton development across the region.

With the preliminary rounds producing several surprises, attention now shifts to the semi-finals, where competitors will battle for places in the championship’s decisive matches.

The remaining programme features men’s and women’s singles, para-badminton, doubles and mixed doubles events, with more closely fought encounters expected as the tournament approaches its conclusion.

For the organisers, the championship represents more than a contest for trophies. It is also an opportunity to identify promising players, strengthen competitive badminton in the Southeast and prepare athletes for greater challenges at national level.
