Lyema Dopolo and Liam April offer a glimpse of potential against Pirates

Facing Orlando Pirates gave African Stars FC’s South African duo, Lyema Dopolo and Liam April, a demanding platform to showcase their qualities, and both offered reasons to watch their progress closely.

The Namibian champions lost 1-0 in the first leg of their CAF Champions League second preliminary round tie in Gaborone on Saturday.

In the defeat, captain Ronald Ketjijere identified qualities worth nurturing in both players. His assessment offered a balanced picture, noting that Dopolo showed leadership but needs defensive restraint, while April’s positional awareness must be matched by greater involvement in possession.

DOPOLO’S LEADERSHIP COMES WITH A WARNING

Dopolo’s comfort on the ball and passing range give African Stars a defender capable of helping them build attacks. Against Pirates, though, his responsibility extended beyond possession.

With Brave Warriors defender Charles Hambira unavailable through injury, the former FC Ongos captain had to help organise the back line alongside Josef Bonifasiua.

“He is a very strong defender. You could see he was commanding the defence and showing good leadership qualities through his instructions and the information he was giving during the game,” Ketjijere told FARPost. “With our most senior defender out injured, he took responsibility for leading the defensive line.”

That endorsement adds substance to the impression of a centre-back comfortable accepting responsibility. Yet Ketjijere, a former Tuks midfielder, also highlighted the danger of allowing that willingness to become overcommitment.

“There were two instances on Saturday when he stepped out of the defensive line to press deep in midfield, leaving a gap behind him,” he explained. “Instead, he needs to communicate with the midfielders so they can pick up the player dropping into that space.”

For Dopolo, the next step is therefore about judging when to engage and when to hold his position. His aggression can help Stars regain possession, but leaving the defensive line requires coordination with those around him.

APRIL MUST ADD INFLUENCE TO DISCIPLINE

April’s contribution was rooted in helping African Stars keep midfield compact. His willingness to compete provided protection, but Ketjijere’s praise went beyond tackling.

“He is a quality player on the ball, passes well and reads the game very well in terms of his positioning. He made a couple of good interceptions.”

The captain also pointed to April’s versatility after he moved into defence alongside Dopolo in the closing stages. However, the midfielder’s defensive contribution came with the challenge to become more involved when African Stars have possession.

“He needs to influence the game and get on the ball more. In the first half, you could see he had very few touches,” Ketjijere said. “He needs the endurance and willingness to make runs from midfield into the attacking third.”

That is a more specific development target than simply adding aggression. April must connect his defensive work with the build-up and support attacks, giving teammates another passing option. Ketjijere believes his shooting ability provides a reason to advance.

“He has scored for us before and can strike the ball, so he needs to get into those shooting positions.”

GERALD GÜTHE EXPECTS ANOTHER STEP FORWARD

African Stars coach Gerald Güthe shared his captain’s belief that the pair have more to offer.

“They are very important members of the squad. Good boys. Very disciplined, on and off the field,” he told FARPost. “I think that they did very well today. But I know that there is more; I know that they can bring more.”

The return leg offers another examination of that potential at their opponents’ fortress Orlando Amstel Arena.
