5 days to go: Amokachi, Ikpeba, Adebayor lead African legends for Lagos football reunion

Lagos is set to host an exciting reunion of some of Africa’s greatest football stars as members of Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 national teams prepare to take on a select side of African football legends in a historic exhibition match on November 8.

With five days to the encounter, preparations are gathering momentum for the Legends Football Game, which will bring together former Super Eagles stars whose achievements helped establish Nigeria as a major force in international football, blueprint reports.

The highly anticipated match will take place on Sunday at the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium, Onikan, Lagos, with several household names from Nigerian and African football expected to participate.

The reunion will celebrate two generations of Nigerian footballers who delivered remarkable achievements, winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and the men’s football gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

Amokachi, Ikpeba, Eguavoen lead Nigerian legends

Among the former Super Eagles players expected to feature for Nigeria are Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal, Ben Iroha, Victor Ikpeba, Austin Eguavoen, Aloy Agu, Mutiu Adepoju and Finidi George.

The players were members of, or featured prominently in, the Nigerian teams that produced some of the country’s most memorable football moments during the 1990s.

The 1994 generation made history by winning Nigeria’s second Africa Cup of Nations title in Tunisia, defeating Zambia 2-1 in the final through a brace from Emmanuel Amunike.

The team subsequently represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the United States, marking the country’s first appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

Nigeria impressed at the competition, defeating Bulgaria and Greece in the group stage before losing 2-1 to Italy in the Round of 16 after extra time.

Two years later, the country’s football reputation received another major boost when the Nigerian Under-23 team won gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games.

The Dream Team, coached by Johannes Bonfrere, defeated Brazil in a dramatic semi-final before overcoming Argentina 3-2 in the final to become the first African country to win Olympic football gold.

The achievements of the two generations remain defining moments in Nigerian sporting history.

Adebayor, Appiah, Song headline African legends

The Nigerian side will face an equally distinguished collection of former African football stars, including Togolese striker Emmanuel Adebayor, Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah, Cameroonian defender Rigobert Song and Alex Song.

The participation of the former African internationals is expected to add an international dimension to the encounter, bringing together players whose careers helped shape African football across different generations.

Adebayor enjoyed a distinguished career in European football, representing clubs including Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Real Madrid.

Appiah captained Ghana to its first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2006, while Rigobert Song represented Cameroon at several major international tournaments and established himself as one of the continent’s prominent defenders.

The reunion is expected to provide supporters with an opportunity to see some of the continent’s celebrated former players share the pitch once again.

CANEX WKND 2026 provides platform for reunion

The Legends Football Game is being presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with Afreximbank and CANEX as part of CANEX WKND 2026, the bank’s flagship platform for Africa’s creative and cultural industries.

Beyond the sporting spectacle, the initiative is designed to celebrate African heritage, promote cultural connections and recognise the contributions of sporting icons to the continent’s global image.

The organisers said the event would also create opportunities to connect former international stars with younger generations of footballers and supporters.

The participating legends are expected to arrive in Lagos on November 6, ahead of the match and other scheduled activities.

500 young footballers to benefit from mini camp

As part of the activities leading up to the game, the organisers have scheduled a mini football camp involving 500 young players.

The initiative will provide an opportunity for the youngsters to interact with some of the former international stars and gain inspiration from their experiences in professional football.

A professional photoshoot involving the legends is also scheduled ahead of match day.

The organisers said the activities would extend the significance of the reunion beyond the exhibition match by creating opportunities for younger football enthusiasts to engage with players whose achievements helped put African football on the international map.

Music, entertainment to headline match-day activities

The November 8 programme will feature a blend of football, music and cultural entertainment.

Activities will include musical performances, dance presentations and an appearance by the Loud Urban Choir before the legends take to the pitch.

The match is scheduled to kick off at 5pm, with a special presentation planned for the heroes of the 1994 and 1996 Nigerian teams after the final whistle.

The organisers have announced that the stadium gates will open to spectators at 1:30pm, giving fans ample time to participate in the pre-match activities.

For supporters unable to attend physically, the encounter will be broadcast live on Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), African Independent Television (AIT) and Silverbird Television between 5pm and 7pm.

With several celebrated names expected in Lagos, the Legends Football Game promises to be a nostalgic gathering for Nigerian and African football supporters, celebrating the achievements of generations whose exploits continue to inspire the continent.
