Mathys Tel has been rewarded for his fine performances for Tottenham recently and for his displays for France’s U21s during the last international break.

Tel has certainly not had it easy at Spurs, arriving at the club at one of their lowest phases and enduring a relegation battle in his first full season in North London.

It is sometimes easy to forget that the wide-forward is just 21 years of age and has plenty of room to develop.

We have seen the former Bayern Munich man showcase glimpses of his quality in Tottenham’s last two matches against Chelsea and Crystal Palace, with the Frenchman arguably being Spurs’ standout attacker at Stamford Bridge.

The brilliant solo goal he netted against the Blues was undoubtedly his best moment in a Spurs shirt, and fans will be hoping that it is a sign of things to come.

Tottenham starlet Mathys Tel called up to France’s preliminary list for Nations League

The forward’s resurgence began in the last international break, Tel scoring five goals in four matches for France’s U21s, thus becoming the highest scorer in history for Les Bleuets with 14 goals at U21 level.

According to L’Equipe, Tel has now been rewarded with a call-up to France’s preliminary list for the Nations League matches against Italy and Turkey.

Zinedine Zidane often calls up young talents in his preliminary list in order to get a closer look at them and give them a chance to make it to the senior squad.

The preliminary list, which Tel is part of, will consist of 50 players, which will be whittled down to a list of around 25 to 29 players for the Nations League fixtures.

Tel is highly regarded by Spurs teammates and Roberto De Zerbi

While the perception of Tel on the outside may be that he is an inconsistent but talented player, inside the club, the Frenchman appears to be thought of very highly.

Speaking after the win over Chelsea, De Zerbi admitted that he beleives more in Tel than the forward does in himself.

Speaking to Sky Sports a couple of weeks ago, James Maddison named Tel as the most skilful player in the Tottenham squad, backing him to explode if he can get on the ball in the right areas.

Maddison said: “I went with Mathys Tel. Just super quick feet, super quick. Just very good one-on-one. Even today in small-sided games, his feet were so sharp. If we can get Mathys into one-v-one situations more, I think you’ll see the best of him.

“Especially this year, with this manager, we’re playing more attacking football. If we can get him the ball a lot, then he can torment some full-backs. Great quick feet.”
