Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana was taken to hospital for medical checks after being involved in a multi-vehicle road accident in Turkey, but the Cameroon international and his family reportedly escaped without serious injuries.

The 30-year-old, who is currently on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor from Manchester United, was involved in the accident on Thursday evening while travelling home with his family following his team’s 2-0 victory over Scottish side Hearts in the UEFA Conference League. Blueprint reports

Reports from Turkey indicated that another vehicle struck Onana’s car from behind at high speed, forcing it into a vehicle travelling ahead and triggering a chain collision.

The incident occurred along the Yomra road near the coastal city of Trabzon, where emergency services reportedly attended the scene.

Onana was taken to hospital for medical examinations following the collision but was discharged shortly afterwards after checks indicated that he was in good condition.

The presence of his family in the vehicle initially raised concerns about their safety. However, reports said the goalkeeper and his relatives escaped without injuries.

Trabzonspor president confirms goalkeeper’s condition

Trabzonspor president Ertuğrul Doğan reassured supporters following the incident, confirming that the goalkeeper was in good condition.

“André Onana was involved in a road traffic accident earlier this evening. There are no problems with him, and we wish him a speedy recovery,” Doğan told local media, according to reports.

Club officials reportedly went to the scene to check on the goalkeeper following the accident.

Images circulated by media outlets appeared to show damage to the front section of Onana’s vehicle, with debris scattered across the road.

Although the collision involved multiple vehicles, initial reports did not indicate serious injuries to Onana or his family.

The goalkeeper had not issued a personal statement at the time of the reports, while further information about the circumstances of the accident and any possible investigation had not been made public.

Accident follows Trabzonspor’s European victory

The accident occurred after a successful evening for Trabzonspor, who defeated Hearts 2-0 in their UEFA Conference League fixture on Thursday.

Onana featured in the match and helped his side secure a clean sheet before leaving the stadium for home.

The victory provided a positive sporting backdrop to what became a worrying incident away from the pitch.

The goalkeeper’s safe escape was particularly significant given reports that his family was travelling with him when the collision occurred.

Onana is currently serving a second loan spell at Trabzonspor after initially joining the Turkish side from Manchester United in 2025.

His performances have helped him establish himself at the club, with recent reports highlighting his clean-sheet record and contributions between the posts.

Onana’s future remains tied to Manchester United

Onana joined Manchester United from Italian club Inter Milan in 2023 in a transfer reported to be worth approximately £43.8 million.

He arrived at Old Trafford with considerable expectations after impressing at Inter, where he helped the club reach the UEFA Champions League final during the 2022/23 season.

However, his time at Manchester United was marked by inconsistent performances and scrutiny following several costly errors.

He subsequently moved to Trabzonspor on loan in search of regular playing time and an opportunity to rebuild his confidence.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper remains contracted to Manchester United, although his immediate playing future is with the Turkish club.

His recent performances for Trabzonspor have attracted attention, with reports indicating that he has recorded four clean sheets in his last five appearances.

Concern gives way to relief

News of the accident prompted concern among supporters, particularly because of the reports that Onana’s family was inside the vehicle.

However, the confirmation from Trabzonspor’s president that the goalkeeper was in good condition helped ease fears surrounding the incident.

The available reports indicate that Onana and his family escaped without serious injury, although he was taken to hospital for precautionary medical checks before being discharged.

Attention will now turn to his recovery from the shock of the incident and his availability for Trabzonspor’s upcoming fixtures.

For now, the most significant development is that the Cameroon international and his family reportedly survived the multi-vehicle collision without serious harm.
