Spurs boss Roberto De Zerbi has urged his Tottenham team to use their poor record at Stamford Bridge as motivation when they take to the pitch against Chelsea this weekend.
Tottenham Hotspur are set to face Chelsea next in the Premier League in matchweek eight at Stamford Bridge, following their 3-1 victory over Coventry City.
Last weekend’s victory marked Spurs’ first of the season, lifting them off the bottom of the table after a dismal start to the 2026/27 campaign in which they failed to win any of their opening six matches.
Roberto De Zerbi will be hoping that Tottenham’s latest result can spark their season into life. However, with a daunting trip to Stamford Bridge looming, it remains uncertain whether Spurs can build on that momentum and make it two wins in a row.
History strongly favours Chelsea in this fixture, with the Blues boasting a dominant record against their London rivals.
In Premier League history, Spurs have won only once in 34 matches at Stamford Bridge. That solitary victory came eight years ago when Tottenham triumphed 3-1 – their only ever win at the ground.
Even on that day, Chelsea took the lead through Alvaro Morata, before Christian Eriksen scored a screamer just before half-time. In the second 45, it was the Dele Alli show, with the Spurs midfielder netting a brace to end the Stamford Bridge curse in style.

De Zerbi is well aware of the abysmal record and insists it should serve as motivation for his players ahead of Saturday’s clash.
Speaking to football.london about Tottenham’s poor record at Stamford Bridge, he said: “I think it is not just this negative record. There are many, many negative records, but for me it is one motivation more. For the players, I want this negative record, they give us more motivation, more mentality, more energy to win a game, to play a good game. Because we have the qualities enough to win a game, this game.”
Spurs have shown they can beat Chelsea under De Zerbi. The two sides met during their pre-season tour of Australia in August, with Tottenham coming away 2-1 winners despite playing much of the second half with ten men.
De Zerbi himself has managed two wins over Chelsea in six meetings, proving he knows how to secure results against the Blues.
All eyes will now be on Stamford Bridge this Saturday as Tottenham aim to finally put their poor record against Chelsea to rest.
