Fernandes questions tactics as tension mounts at Manchester United

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has questioned the team’s tactical approach following their 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.

Como raced into an early lead and scored four goals, with Joshua Zirkzee netting a late consolation for United.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Fernandes criticised United’s lack of pressure on the ball and ineffective movement, suggesting that the team’s approach allowed Como to dictate proceedings.

“There was not enough pressure on the ball and not many good movements off the ball. There were many things not going our way,” the Portuguese midfielder said.

The United captain also questioned the coaching staff’s decision not to adopt a more aggressive pressing strategy.

“Sometimes we have to be more brave on the pressure, trying to take a risk of getting that press very high and making them uncomfortable, as they did to us,” he said.

Carrick, however, challenged the suggestion that the pressing strategy was the main problem, insisting that the players’ work rate and application were equally important.

“We actually half pressed man to man in the second half and ended up conceding a goal from that,” the United manager said.

“Whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win.”

The United manager also expressed his displeasure with the team’s performance and apologised to the travelling supporters, acknowledging that the display had fallen short of expectations.

“I have to apologise to the supporters,” he said.

United must now address the concerns exposed by the defeat as they seek to improve their performances and restore confidence in the team.
