What are we to make of this Florida football team? Are they the hapless defense that never stood a chance against Missouri and South Carolina? Or are they the world-beating punishing runners that trampled Ole Miss and Texas?
Fans get another week to debate about which are the real Gators (5-2, 3-2 in SEC) and, perhaps more importantly, which will show up for their big rivalry game against Georgia. The Bulldogs will be faux-hosting the "Cocktail Party" this year in Atlanta and will be out for vengeance after losing last week on a last-second kick against Auburn.
Maybe Jon Sumrall wants his team to become giant-slayers. Defeating No. 4 Georgia would give UF three wins over teams ranked in the top 6 of the US LBM Coaches Poll at the time. Jadan Baugh and company ran for 302 yards and six touchdowns in a rout of now-No. 7 Ole Miss, and last week, Tramell Jones stepped in with two TD passes in a second straight stunning upset over Arch Manning and No. 1 Texas.
Toppling another one of the SEC's giants might make it impossible to keep the Gators out of the College Football Playoff ... as long as they can avoid more mind-numbing losses. Sumrall has a decision to make at quarterback: whether to stick with Jones or go back to Aaron Philo if his shoulder heals over the off week.
There's no such thing as an easy slate in the SEC. Here's what you need to know about Florida's remaining schedule:
No. The Gators are on their only bye week of the 2026 season.
Florida comes back Oct. 31 against Georgia (6-1, 4-1) at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. After that, they kick off November against Oklahoma (3-3, 1-2) and their suffocating defense. Then comes an unexpected test: a trip to Lexington to take on No. 12 Kentucky, who would be in the SEC championship game at 6-1 (4-1) if the season ended today.
UF's season comes to a seemingly softer conclusion, with senior day at The Swamp against Vanderbilt and a Black Friday trip to Tallahassee to take on rival Florida State, who might have moved on from coach Mike Norvell by then.
