Michael Carrick has been told never to play Lisandro Martinez again following his 'disgraceful' sending off against Chelsea. Martinez, 28, was shown a second yellow card after hitting Wesley Fofana in the face shortly after Manchester United had gone 1-0 down at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
The defender's foul also led to a penalty, which Cole Palmer converted to leave 10-man United with a slim chance of getting their first win in nine games and pile the pressure on Carrick's position as manager. Martinez had only just been booked for giving away the free-kick which led to the penalty incident.
Leading with his arm, the Argentina international jumped into Fofana with no chance of winning the ball and the collision was spotted by VAR. After referee Peter Bankes gave Martinez his marching orders, the United star trudged off and was ignored by Carrick.
United legend Peter Schmeichel was furious, telling Premier League Productions: "I put this solely on Lisandro Martinez's shoulders. This is an absolute disgrace how he played this game.

"Two weeks ago he came out and made some very, very strong statements against his team-mates, against the football club, and it felt like he was trying to orchestrate a move. He's in the last year of his contract.
"What he did today, honestly, I have no words. The first goal, he's played a World Cup final, you can't defend the way he defended for the first goal and the penalty, I literally have no words how crazy that was. Then he walks off the pitch shaking his head as if he's done nothing wrong. So bad."
Martinez has eight months left on his contract and some believe that he's angling for an exit following a string of poor performances and his outburst against the board last month, which saw him slapped with a fine. The ex-Ajax star called out United's director of football, Jason Wilcox, and accused the board of not doing enough in the summer transfer window to strengthen Carrick's squad.
Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy was asked by BBC Radio 5 Live whether he'd recall Martinez once he serves his one-game ban. "No, I wouldn't, only because he looks like he has already gone," Murphy replied.

"You have to put the club first. Michael has got to make some big decisions. You can't have a liability in your team. His head isn't right. He is not going to be there long term, that is evident."
Murphy added when he appeared on Match of the Day,: "There was the (Dominic) Solanke goal, the interview, the rants, and today his performance in the second half was just nowhere near it. To do that after you've just received a yellow, I don't know whether he's thinking of getting away, whether he's just disgruntled at everything going on at the club.
"He's given Carrick a big dilemma now. I'm unsure whether when he's served his suspension, whether Michael is going to put him back in the team."
Carrick himself, however, doesn't feel let down by Martinez. "I've not seen it back, so I don't know if it was or not," the Red Devils boss said post-match. "It's a big moment in the game. The second goal and losing a man at that stage had a big influence on it, for sure."
Martinez is set be available when United host Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday, although the 28-year-old will be banned for next weekend's game away to Aston Villa. His return from suspension will coincide with the Red Devils' visit to Anfield on November 22.
