Matthew Stafford breaks silence on elbow injury scare with hilarious response

The last thing the Los Angeles Rams need right now is another injured superstar, especially the 38-year-old quarterback and reigning NFL MVP that is holding their Super Bowl dreams together.

So when Matthew Stafford was spotted with a bag of ice wrapped around his right throwing elbow following Sunday’s victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium, there was concern across the board.

Rams’ head coach Sean McVay’s answer when asked about it on Monday certainly didn’t help extinguish the flames.

“You’ll have to talk to him about that,” McVay said. “He’s had some soreness there. I think he’d be better equipped once you guys talk to him to answer that. I can’t attest to stuff that I’m not necessarily aware of.”

So we did.

On Wednesday, Stafford dismissed the concerns with the same casual confidence he displays while dissecting opposing defenses.

“You guys have been blind,” Stafford joked. “I feel like I’ve been icing my arm every day out here walking around. That’s on you guys.”

Then came the punchline.

“Listen, I’m 38 years old trying to keep up with these young bucks. A little bit of soreness and stuff that is not uncommon this time of year.”

Stafford insisted his elbow hasn’t affected his availability.

“I haven’t missed a rep at practice. I haven’t missed a rep in a game and I feel good. I’m not too worried about it.”

That’s welcome news for a Rams team whose injured reserve list is beginning to resemble a Pro Bowl roster.

Cornerback Jaylen Watson became the latest casualty Wednesday, requiring season-ending shoulder surgery. He’s the third Rams player lost for the year in two weeks.

McVay acknowledged this season’s injury epidemic is the worst he’s experienced in 10 years, surpassing even the disastrous 2022 campaign when the defending Super Bowl champions finished 5-12.

For now, Stafford’s throwing elbow appears to be one less headache for a franchise running dangerously low on healthy bodies.
