“I’m No Steph Curry”: LeBron James Makes Honest Confession After Nearly Missing Out on $100,000 for Charity

Even the all-time leading scorer in NBA history experiences a touch of pre-shot nerves when $100,000 hangs in the balance. During another blockbuster challenge thrown by YouTube’s challenge guru himself, Jimmy Donaldson, better known as MrBeast, the new Philadelphia 76ers superstar, LeBron James, faced off in an intense one-minute three-point shootout for a noble cause. Filmed on LeBron’s home turf in Akron, MrBeast made James a little nervous at first.

In his latest video titled ‘Beat LeBron, Win $100,000‘ that dropped on Saturday, MrBeast went against the world’s top athletes – WNBA star Caitlin Clark, soccer’s reigning rockstar Erling Haaland, Olympic titans Simone Biles and Alysa Liu, and of course, NBA superstar LeBron James. Back in Ohio, MrBeast challenged Bron to a three-point shootout.

With $100,000 on the line for the LeBron James Family Foundation, James offered a humorous, self-aware disclaimer before stepping beyond the arc.

“I’m no Steph Curry, but I can make a couple of shots,” James quipped, keeping his expectations grounded. But once he saw Jimmy miss his practice shot, he jumped on the challenge.

The kids even predicted LeBron was going to win, much to Donaldson’s discouragement. It’s a good thing he couldn’t hear his own friends say, “Jimmy ain’t got a chance.” With the odds against the YouTuber, he launched into the timed competition against the 4x NBA champion.

Filmed during James’ offseason trip to Ohio prior to signing his deal with Philadelphia in free agency, the high-stakes shootout proved unexpectedly dramatic. Surrounded by pediatric cancer survivors from the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the young onlookers cheered enthusiastically for LeBron.

Despite the crowd favoring the 4x MVP, the contest remained surprisingly tight. While James started strong, MrBeast overcame an early slump to tie the score midway through the minute. Down to the final seconds, both competitors hoisted simultaneous attempts. James edged out the victory by a razor-thin 6–5 margin to secure the $100,000 donation for his foundation.

The thrilling shootout was filmed during another one of MrBeast’s star-studded charity videos, titled “I Helped 100 Kids Fight Cancer,” which was released in July. A little different than the latest one, MrBeast did multiple challenges with celebrity help to get the number of kids he helped up to 100. When MrBeast first surprised students at the I PROMISE School in Akron, Ohio, LeBron James arrived, confirming he was there for a good cause and not to sign with the Cavaliers as everyone predicted.

Beast Philanthropy, alongside Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C), Amgen, the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and the LeBron James Family Foundation collaborated back then for an epic moment in Bron’s old stomping grounds. James arrived and handed over the keys to his foundation’s venue to Mr Beast and his young guests.

“I got something special for you guys. I am handing over the keys to my foundation’s House Three Thirty, that’s down the street for an unbelievable experience for you guys,” he told the kids.

During that project, James opened the doors of the I PROMISE School and House Three Thirty, the foundation’s community hub offering dining, retail, and mentorship resources. He gave those young cancer survivors unforgettable experiences. Besides getting to witness this shootout, the children enjoyed a court session with James, toured the LeBron James Museum, and shared a special dinner at Buckets.

“It means a lot to me and my foundation to be a part of uplifting these amazing kids and giving them a day to just have fun,” James said of the event. “It was an honor to share the court with them, and even better to share our space and create incredible memories alongside their families. We just wanted them to know they are real life superheroes.”

The video also featured other heartwarming moments across sports and entertainment, including young patients attending a film premiere with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, a meet-and-greet with K-pop group Stray Kids, a special day with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and a massive blood drive in Greenville, North Carolina, aiming to save 1,000 lives.

Stand Up To Cancer co-founder Katie Couric praised Donaldson for leveraging his massive digital reach and celebrity connections, which routinely rivals major television broadcasts, to drive critical support toward pediatric cancer research.

While James may not lay claim to Stephen Curry’s legendary shooting mantle, his clutch performance when the clock hit zero delivered a major victory for young heroes off the court.
