It was a back-to-back loss for Manchester City after losing 1-0 at home against Brighton who avenged their Carabao Cup loss midweek. Fabian Hurzeler’s men had twice taken the lead at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday but were edged out on penalties.
On Saturday, they held on to a highly impressive victory to move just two points behind City in third. Brighton scored the winning goal just 11 minutes in courtesy of a major helping hand from right-back Matheus Nunes, whose miscued clearance fell nicely for Yasin Ayari to convert from close range.
City should have levelled 10 minutes later when Iliman Ndiaye rose to meet Elliot Anderson’s cross but planted his header the wrong side of the post, before the Senegal international stung Bart Verbruggen’s palms at the near post.
Manchester was all blurred on Saturday with Manchester United also losing against Chelsea after failing to take several chances created in the first half.
Estevao Willian, who had not started a Premier League match this season, was in his best element, helping his team to a 2-0 win.
The 19-year-old winger was an unused substitute for the midweek penalty shootout defeat by Liverpool but was still serenaded with chants from away fans at Anfield.
Three days later, after questions had been raised about the Brazil international’s lack of opportunities, Chelsea supporters made their feelings clear.
Early on against United at Stamford Bridge, supporters chanted “Steve-o”, their tongue-in-cheek nickname for the £38m signing from Palmeiras.
This time he was on the field, making things happen in a team that lacked a recognised striker, and the loud backing from the stands appeared justified.
Estevao had an early goal ruled out for offside before another fine nearpost finish in the second half was disallowed – a marginal decision.
At the end of his 86-minute display in the Blues’ 2-0 victory, Estevao received a standing ovation from the home crowd and a hug from Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. He had six shots, the joint-most by a Chelsea player in a Premier League match this season, along with a host of other impressive attacking contributions.
A wonderful individual goal from Morgan Rogers and a Cole Palmer penalty were enough for the Blues to see off 10-man Manchester United at Stamford Bridge and get back to winning ways in the Premier League.
A second half red card for Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United made the game more difficult for the away team as the game ended 2-0.
